The department's early years were guided by esteemed professors such as Prof. B. N. Nagnur from Karnatak University, India, with support from the Indian Co-operation Mission. Throughout its development, notable figures like Dr. P. C. Sharma and Dr. A. V. Kharshikar played instrumental roles in shaping the M.Sc. Statistics program.
Over the years, the department has been led by exceptional Heads of the Department (HoDs) including Prof. Ganga Shrestha, Prof. Mrigendra Lal Singh, Prof. Devendra Chhetry, Prof. Azaya Bikram Sthapit, Prof. Ram Chandra Singh, Prof. Shankar Prasad Khanal, and Prof. Srijan Lal Shrestha. Currently, the department is headed by Prof. Dr. Gauri Shrestha, a highly accomplished statistician.
Commitment to Academic Excellence
Recognizing the evolving landscape of education, the Central Department of Statistics adopted the semester system in 2012 for its two-year Master's Degree program. This change brought significant improvements to the curriculum, which was further revised in 2015 to align with international standards and maintain consistency across central departments of the Institute of Science and Technology (IOST) at Tribhuvan University.
The revised curriculum, comprising 64 credits, emphasizes the acquisition of diverse statistical skills and the development of research capabilities. New courses have been introduced to enhance the academic standards of the program, empowering graduates to excel in their professional pursuits. The inclusion of dissertation options allows students to deepen their research expertise and contribute to the field of statistics.
A Focus on Academic Integrity and Collaboration
At the Central Department of Statistics, maintaining a strict academic calendar has been a priority since the implementation of the semester system. By ensuring timely completion of courses and assessments, the department fosters a sense of confidence and belief in the knowledge and practical skills acquired by students during their studies.
Furthermore, the department emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships among faculty members, administrative staff, and students. This commitment to fostering a cordial and friendly environment enables open communication, collaboration, and a sense of belonging within the department.
With its long-standing history and commitment to academic excellence, the Central Department of Statistics at Tribhuvan University continues to shape the statistical landscape in Nepal. Admission Guidelines:
Criteria and Eligibility for M.Sc. / M.A. (Statistics)
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics or an equivalent degree recognized by Tribhuvan University (TU) is required for eligibility.
- Applicants must pass the entrance examination conducted by the Central Department of Statistics (CDS), Institute of Science and Technology (IOST).
- Admission for a fixed quota will be based on merit, taking into account the reservation guidelines of TU. Marks obtained in the Bachelor's Degree may also be considered if necessary.
Ph.D. (Statistics)
Criteria and Eligibility for Ph.D. (Statistics)
- The Ph.D. program in Statistics offered by the Central Department of Statistics, IOST, Tribhuvan University is designed for individuals seeking a career in teaching, research, and advanced knowledge in Statistics.
- Prospective Ph.D. scholars are expected to demonstrate a high standard of academic excellence and make substantial contributions to theoretical and applied areas of Statistics through original research.
- The Ph.D. program is regulated by the Research Committee (RC-IOST) constituted under the chair of the Dean, in accordance with the Tribhuvan University Organization and Academic Administration Rule 2050, Chapter 3, Section 9.
Application Process for Ph.D. (Statistics)
- Researchers interested in pursuing Ph.D. research in Statistics from CDS should visit the department or make correspondence to consult about possible research areas.
- After discussions with the Head of the Department (HoD) and the intended Supervisor, eligible candidates for Ph.D. research (according to IOST Ph.D. Rules and Regulations) need to prepare a research proposal. This process may take several months to finalize, considering mutual understanding between the candidate and the intended supervisor.
- Once the research proposal is prepared, the candidate undergoes a successful proposal defense viva-voce conducted by the Central Department Research Committee (CDRC).
- The candidate's application is then forwarded to IOST for Ph.D. registration.
- IOST conducts an entrance examination, and only successful candidates are eligible for Ph.D. registration.
