National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) Vacancy for Research Associate:

National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) is seeking applications for Research Associate (RA) positions for the Sajag-Nepal Project: Preparedness and Planning for the Mountain Hazard and Risk Chain in Nepal. Sajag -Nepal is a collaborative research project which is designed to make a significant difference to the ways in which residents, government, and the international community take decisions to manage Multi-Hazards and Systemic Risks. The team consists of Nepali and international researchers and practitioners from a range of disciplines, including geoscience, social science, and the humanities.

Sajag-Nepal involves:

Universities of Durham, Northumbria, Oxford, Bristol (UK), National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET), BBC Media Action - Nepal, Stiftelsen Flowminder, IFRC Nepal, Social Science Baha Nepal, Tribhuvan University (Nepal), and Universities of British Columbia (Canada) Auckland and Canterbury (New Zealand).

The project includes four work packages which will:

(1) Think critically about the Social, Political, Economic, and Environmental Context within which disasters occur in Nepal;

(2) Establish a new approach to National-Scale Strategic-Planning for Complex Multi-Hazard events, including earthquakes, monsoons, and landslides;

(3) Develop interdisciplinary science to Anticipate, Plan for, and Communicate the Range of Hazards that occur during the annual monsoon; and

(4) Find the best ways to utilize Local Knowledge and Interdisciplinary Science to inform how to prepare for and respond to multi-hazard disasters.

NSET seeks applications for the following positions from eligible candidates for roles on Sajag-Nepal:

Position: Research Associate in Multi-Hazard Inventories (RA1)

No. of Position: 1

Appointment Type: Full Time for 3 year

Qualification:

Bachelor of science, computer or engineering, and preferably a Master's degree or equivalent experience of recent research and methods in geological hazards, including landslides, strong practical experience with GIS and cartography including geodatabase and map creation for geoscience applications.

Location: NSET Headquarters in Kathmandu with frequent field visits.

2. Position: Research Associate in Risk from the Mountain Hazard Chain (RA2)

No. of Position: 1

Appointment Type: Full Time for 3 year with the possibility of extension

Qualification:

Bachelor of science or engineering, and preferably a Master's degree or equivalent experience in hazard and risk, good knowledge of risk analysis and communication, and the translation of scientific information for assessing hazard and risk. Good working understanding of risk mapping and visualization. Strong practical experience with GIS, including geodatabase creation and management and data analysis.

Location: NSET Headquarters in Kathmandu with frequent field visits.

3. Position: Research Associate in Multi-Hazard Mapping (RA3)

No. of Position:        1

Appointment Type: Full Time for 3 year

Qualification:

Bachelor of science or engineering, and preferably a Master's degree or equivalent experience, with a particular emphasis on innovative methods applied to the processing and analysis of remote sensing data. Good understanding of spatial data analysis and geo-statistics. Good working understanding of geohazards and risks. Strong practical experience with GIS and remote sensing, including geodatabase creation, management, and data analysis, and the development of web apps.

Location: NSET Headquarters in Kathmandu with frequent field visits.

4. Position: Research Associate in Disaster Preparedness and Response (RA4)

No. of Position: 1

Appointment Type: Full Time for 3 year

Qualification:

Master's degree in a relevant field, such as social science, disasters, and risk, including training in qualitative research methods, the experience of working in post-disaster response in Nepal, and a good understanding of international disaster response protocols and architecture. Familiarity with the roles of national and international disaster response agencies in Nepal, as well as experience with managing relevant data sets for disaster preparedness or response
