Galyang Municipality's Educational Support Initiative: Ensuring Access to Higher Education
Galyang Municipality has launched a robust scholarship initiative aimed at ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder higher education for its residents. Himalal Bhandari, the head of the education department, outlined the program's structure, which provides substantial support to students at both urban and rural educational institutions.
Financial Aid Details
- Urban Support: Students enrolled in urban campuses receive monthly financial assistance to help cover their education costs.
- Rural and Underprivileged Support: Special emphasis is placed on aiding very poor, underprivileged, and disadvantaged students. Those studying in classes 11 and 12 at Galyang Multiple Campus and Malunga Multiple Campus are eligible for full scholarships.
- Annual Assistance: Each qualifying student receives Rs 10,800 per year as a monthly stipend to facilitate their studies.
- Scholarship Allocation: For broader reach, the program allocates scholarships to 10% of eligible students in urban campuses and 20% in classes 11 and 12, benefiting 36 students directly.
Total Investment in Education
This year, Galyang Municipality has disbursed Rs 13 lakh 800 in the form of monthly fees and scholarships, impacting 214 students. The process requires schools and campuses to solicit scholarship applications, which are then vetted and recommended to the municipality for final approval and disbursement.
Goal and Implementation
Mayor Guruprasad Bhattarai emphasized the program's objective to remove financial barriers to education, thereby fostering educational access for all residents. Since his election in 2079, Mayor Bhattarai has been pivotal in implementing these measures, which not only support individual students but also aim to transform the educational landscape of Galyang.
Sustainability and Accountability
The scholarship program is designed to promote not just access but also accountability. Students benefiting from full scholarships are eligible to reapply for support in subsequent years provided they successfully pass their courses. This ensures that the aid is both a motivator and a reward for academic perseverance.
Impact and Future Prospects
The initiative by Galyang Municipality is a significant step towards educational equity and accessibility, potentially serving as a model for similar programs elsewhere. The targeted support for financially challenged students ensures that education remains a right, not a privilege, aligning with broader goals of social and economic development within the community.
