Women's Attraction to Teaching Profession Increasing in Myagdi
In Myagdi, a district in Nepal, the number of women entering the teaching profession is increasing. On April 8, 2023, 100 teachers were awarded permanent appointment letters at the primary level, out of which 48 were women. Women find education services to be easier and safer than other government services, which is why they are choosing to become teachers.
Teaching Profession Easier for Women to Enter
According to Dal Bahadur Thapa, the Head of Education Development and Coordination Unit in Myagdi, it is easier for women to enter the education service as compared to men. Men often choose foreign employment or civil service over the teaching profession, whereas women feel comfortable becoming teachers since many of them are housewives.
Increase in Women Passing Teacher Service Exam
Forty-eight percent of women have succeeded in passing the teacher service exam, which is a positive aspect, according to Hikai chief Thapa. This shows that the attraction of women towards the education service has increased significantly.
Expectation of Increased Educational Quality through Inclusive Education Services
Thapa expressed his expectation that an increase in women's participation in the education service will make education services more inclusive and improve educational quality. He also mentioned that the attraction of women towards education services has increased because young people in Myagdi often go for foreign employment.
Teaching Profession Preferred by Women
Urmila Regmi Khatri of Raghuganga rural municipality 3 Mauwaphant said that the teaching profession was her first choice over other government services. She found the teaching profession to be safe and easy for women, having been a contract teacher in schools for the past four years.
Appointment of Newly Permanant Teachers
During a program on April 8, 2023, Education Development and Coordination Hikai Myagdi awarded appointment letters to the newly appointed permanent teachers. One hundred people of primary level who passed the three-stage examination conducted by the Teachers Service Commission were sworn in with appointment letters during the ceremony.
Shortage of Recommendations in Myagdi
This year, 100 teachers at the primary level, 32 at the lower secondary level, and 13 at the secondary level became permanent teachers after passing the three-level examination conducted by the Teachers Service Commission. However, Thapa mentioned that the number of recommendations was less than the quota demanded at all three levels, which indicates a shortage of qualified candidates.
