Tribhuvan University Introduces Qualification Test for Aspiring Teaching Staff

To join the teaching service at Tribhuvan University, candidates must pass a qualification test conducted by the university.

Named the 'University Service Qualification Test,' only those who pass this test will be eligible to take the subsequent examination required for entry into the teaching service. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to join the teaching staff at constituent and affiliated campuses, as well as various departments under Tribhuvan University, according to the Dean, Professor Khadka KC.

  • To join the teaching service at Tribhuvan University, candidates must pass a qualification test conducted by the university.

  • Only those who pass the 'University Service Qualification Test' can participate in subsequent examinations required for entry into the teaching service.

  • Successful candidates will have the opportunity to join the teaching staff at constituent and affiliated campuses and various departments under Tribhuvan University.

  • The qualification test is temporary and will become obsolete once the National Eligibility Test (NET) is implemented.

  • This test is not mandatory for those wishing to teach as guest lecturers at the university.

  • Teachers appointed, transferred, or stationed at the University Campus in Kirtipur must hold a Ph.D. degree.

  • The minimum educational qualification to enter Tribhuvan University's teaching service is a postgraduate degree.

  • Candidates who achieve top scores in the open competitive examinations can choose their preferred campus and department based on merit.

  • The university's general assembly approved these proposals and will be implemented as rules.

  • The assembly also approved policies to address manpower needs and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds and regions for the fiscal year 2081/082.

For now, the university will manage this examination internally. Still, it will become obsolete once the National Eligibility Test (NET), currently being studied by the University Grants Commission, is implemented.

It's worth noting that this test is not mandatory for those wishing to teach as guest lecturers at the university. A new regulation has also been introduced requiring teachers appointed, transferred, or stationed at the University Campus in Kirtipur to hold at least a Ph.D. degree.

The minimum educational qualification to enter Tribhuvan University's teaching service is a postgraduate degree. Candidates who achieve top scores in the open competitive examinations and secure the first rank can choose their preferred campus and department based on merit. However, without a Ph.D., they won't be able to teach at the University Campus.

These proposals were approved at the Thursday general assembly (senate), chaired by Prime Minister and Chancellor of the University KP Sharma Oli. The university will now give these rules a legal framework and implement them.

The assembly also approved policies to address the need for manpower at the university’s central bodies, central departments, departments, and campuses, as well as to support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and regions.

Another decision made on Thursday allows campuses operated by the private sector with Tribhuvan University affiliation to merge with community campuses. Community campuses can merge with other community campuses and private campuses with other private campuses. However, campuses outside the valley cannot merge with campuses within the valley, while those within the valley can merge with those outside but cannot remain in the valley post-merger.

This initiative is expected to revive campuses that are on the verge of closure due to a lack of students, stated Dean KC. The assembly also approved other policies and programs for the fiscal year 2081/082.
