Three Nepali women scientists have received prestigious international awards. Subhangi Subedi Dahal and Supriya Sharma, who are assistant professors at Tribhuvan University, have been awarded the prestigious 'Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Award-2022'. This award carries a cash prize of 50/50 thousand US dollars, which translates to approximately 1 crore 31 lakh rupees.
Babita Paudel Bhattarai, a researcher at the Center for Natural and Applied Sciences (CENAS), has also received the highly esteemed 'Humboldt Research Award' worth 30,000 euros. These awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of these women in their respective fields of study.
Subhangi Subedi Dahal plans to use the award money to further her research in the areas of water hygiene, food safety, chemical fertilizers and micro-plastics. She also intends to provide research fellowships to a dozen undergraduate and postgraduate students, furthering their education and development in the field of science and technology. Supriya Sharma received the OWSD award for her research on antibiotic resistance.
Dahal said that the money received will be spent on water, food security, agriculture and micro plastic studies. "This amount of mine will be spent on the study of water hygiene measurement, food safety, chemical fertilizers and micro-plastics by making nanoparticles," she said. She said that she will also provide research fellowships to about a dozen undergraduate and postgraduate students from the amount he received. Established in 1987, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is an organization under the World Academy of Sciences. The organization, which is a program unit of UNESCO, has been giving awards to 25 female researchers from developing countries who are doing research after graduation in the field of science and technology. According to OWSD, awards are given for international level research in Swadesham. After receiving this award of 50,000 dollars, the researchers have to complete their proposed project within three years.
