The government is ready to provide pension to Nepal Police personnel during their 16 years of service. The minimum pension period is being reduced from 20 to 16 years by amending the police regulations.

As per the demand of the lower level police, the Police Headquarters has put forward a proposal to keep the provision of minimum service limit for pension for 16 years. This provision has been implemented in the Nepal Army last year as well. An official of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that discussions are underway to amend the rules so that volunteers can opt for retirement at the age of 16, but only after 20 years of enrollment. The 16-year provision was implemented in the Nepal Army with the same condition.

There is a problem of losing the opportunity to go abroad and engage in other work after getting retirement in 20 years. That is why the Police Headquarters is ready to make the pension period 16 years. Most of the police who opt for voluntary retirement go for foreign employment. After reaching the age of 40, it is difficult to go for foreign employment. For the same reason, the pension period is being made 16 years.

In a survey conducted by the Police Headquarters two years ago on the problems of soldiers and constables, they had complained about lack of services and untimely promotion. The cabinet meeting held on 13 Mangsir had decided to add three more posts in the police to solve the problem of promotion. It has been decided to add Senior SI, Senior Constable and Assistant Constable posts. Accordingly, about 20,000 policemen will be promoted at a time.

At present, 33 percent of the youth posts will be promoted to assistant constables. Accordingly, out of 46,229 Jawans, 15,402 will be promoted. Similarly, 3,747 senior constables and 1,074 senior constables will be promoted.

As the meeting of the Administration Committee of the Council of Ministers is not held regularly, the amendment of the rules has not been published in the Gazette. A Home Ministry official said that the same provision would be applicable in the Armed Police Force if the minimum service period for pension in Nepal Police is 16 years.
