Specialist Doctors in Nepal Crosses 10 Thousand Mark, According to Nepal Medical Council (NMC)

The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has reported that the number of specialist doctors in Nepal has surpassed the 10,000 mark as of December 31, 2022. This includes 7,110 male specialists and 2,970 female specialists.

Statistics show that there are 32,218 registered doctors in Nepal, including 27,805 medical and 4,413 dental professionals. Among the registered specialists, internal medicine has the highest number with 1,088 doctors, followed by obstetricians and gynecologists with 994, and general surgeons with 947.

Other specialist fields include orthopedics with 805, pediatric specialists with 781, anesthesiology with 677, and radiology and imaging with 663 doctors.

Apart from medical and dental professionals, there are specialists in other fields such as anatomy, biochemistry, community medicine and public health, forensic medicine, hospital administration, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and transfusion medicine.

In addition, there are specialists in various other fields like endocrinology, cardiology, critical care medicine, gastroenterology, hematology, hepatology, nephrology, rheumatology, respiratory and tuberculosis, tropical medicine, family medicine, and palliative medicine.

General practice, geriatric medicine, neonatology, nuclear medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, radiotherapy, and dermatology and venereology are other specialties with a significant number of registered doctors.

In dentistry, there are specialists in MDS, community dentistry, conservative dentistry and endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine and radiology, oral pathology, orthodontics, pedodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics.

The NMC's latest report highlights the growing number of medical and dental professionals in Nepal and their diverse areas of expertise. The availability of such a large pool of specialists is a positive sign for Nepal's healthcare system, as it can provide better healthcare services to the country's citizens.
