"Social Studies and Life Skills" Education is Essential in Class 11 and 12: Mathema

Educationist Kedar Bhakta Mathema said that the inclusion of 'social studies and life skills' as a compulsory subject in class 11 and 12 is positive.  At a discussion on the importance of 'Social Studies and Life Skills' education organized by the Society of Education Journalists and the Society for Social Studies today, Mathema lauded the government's decision and said it was essential for the new generation to learn about democracy, constitution, federalism, and inclusion.

Mathema, the former vice-chancellor of Tribhuvan University, said that general education would be based on continuity and social studies could lead students to good citizenship and broad thinking. "The new generation cannot be useful in the labor market without studying Social Studies and its environment, as big companies and offices also measure the transformative capacity of learning when looking for manpower. Teachers should teach this subject in a practical way rather than in a hurry. ” He said, “Social Education should be interactive. Students should ask the teacher openly in their mother tongue or Nepali language and the teacher should answer. ”

Ganesh Prasad Bhattarai, spokesperson of the Curriculum Development Center, said that all types of schools would implement the new curriculum from this academic session as various stages and processes have been completed. He said that the school curriculum has been reorganized during the implementation of the National Curriculum Draft, 2076 BS, and the National Education Policy, 2076 BS.

Director Bhattarai said that the course was brought to inculcate social values, patriotism, and national spirit among the students by paying attention to the five bases brought by UNESCO for education. After the implementation of this course, the recognition of different faculties like science and education will end in classes 11 and 12 and teaching will be done on a single path.

The center will soon conduct an orientation program on the new curriculum. Private sector school operators have been demanding the implementation of the new curriculum only after doing homework.

Dilliram Sharma, president of the Social Studies Teachers' Society, said that social studies are the only subject and field that makes good citizens; He welcomed the implementation of the new curriculum at the school level. Govinda Bhandari, an expert in social studies, stressed on the need for the concerned authorities to clarify if there is any confusion or obstruction in the implementation of the new curriculum.
