Experts Believe Proposed Nepal University is Key to Reforming Higher Education and Producing Competitive Manpower
The establishment of Nepal University is expected to address various issues and problems in the country's higher education system, according to experts who spoke at an interaction program organized by the Education Journalist Group in Kathmandu. They believe that the proposed university will be instrumental in producing skilled and competitive manpower for the global market.
Strengthening the Foundation of Higher Education in Nepal
Dr. Arjun Karki, Chairman of the Nepal University Infrastructure Preparation and Development Committee, highlighted the need to strengthen the foundation of higher education in Nepal. He emphasized that the proposed Nepal University would produce expert manpower with critical thinking who can engage in the civilized debate for development and solving the problems of the nation.
No Political Appointments at Nepal University
Dr. Karki clarified that there will be no political appointments at Nepal University. He added that the university will not be affiliated with any other institutions, and only the official campus will remain.
Nepal University to Produce Creative and Revolutionary Students
Dr. Suryaraj Acharya, a public policy and infrastructure expert, stated that a new university is necessary because the current university reforms alone will not improve higher education. He also mentioned that an independent university is required as academics might die when the government regulates universities. He added that the sole purpose of Nepal University is to produce competitive manpower in the global market.
Improving Higher Education and Producing Competitive and Skilled Manpower
Professor Dr. Purnakant Adhikari emphasized that the purpose of establishing Nepal University is to improve higher education and produce competitive and skilled manpower. He further mentioned that the need and importance of a new university has increased as multi-modal education will not work only with single education. He believes that Nepal University will produce expert manpower with critical thinking who can engage in civilized debate for development and solving the problems of the nation.
A New Dimension to the Production of World-Class Competitive Skilled Manpower
Krishna Malla, President of Education Journalists Group, highlighted the need for Nepal University to add a new dimension to the production of world-class competitive skilled manpower. He believes that the university should prioritize quality over quantity.
Order Issued and Committee Formed
On April 2, 2021, the 'Nepal University Infrastructure Preparation Development Committee' order 2021 was issued, and a development committee was formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Arjun Karki. On January 19, 2023, the bill to make arrangements regarding Nepal University was submitted to the National Assembly, and on January 24, 2023, the National Assembly passed the resolution that the bill should be considered. Currently, the bill is under discussion in the Legislative Committee of the National Assembly.
Process to Obtain Land for Nepal University
The process of obtaining land for Nepal University has begun with a formal decision in Gaindakot Municipality of Nawalparasi and other surrounding areas. Education engineer Tika Bhattarai has proposed Nepal University with values, culture, style, and autonomous governance structure different from the structure and working style of the current university and realizing the needs of today.
