Preserving the Surel Language: A Local Curriculum Developed in Dolakha

The Surel language, the language of the Surel caste, is at risk of disappearing. With the lack of a linguistic community that speaks the traditional language, inter-caste marriage, and the growing trend of the Nepali language, the younger generation has lost interest in learning the language.

To protect the endangered Surel language, a local curriculum has been developed for its preservation. The teaching of Surchala was started at the request of Surel leaders to preserve the language and promote Surel culture.

Bikas Surel, Central Secretary of the Federation of Nepalese Jana Jati, said that they are active in preserving and promoting the Surel language and culture. The Surel population is 230, with about 60 households. Unfortunately, the Surel caste is far behind in education, with only around 25 SLC passers and 7 people who passed Plus Two.

The Surel people initially lived in Gurumfi of Suri, after moving from a place called Ekansathali in Ramechhap, and have now settled in Suri as their main base. The development of Surel's special initiative is crucial to the preservation of the Surel language and culture.

In conclusion, the development of a local curriculum in Gourishankar Rural Municipality-5, Dolakha, is a significant step in protecting and preserving the Surel language. The importance of the Surel language and culture must be recognized to ensure that it does not become lost to future generations.
