Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's Vision for Agricultural and Forestry Education in Nepal

Nepalese Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as 'Prachanda,' recently highlighted the need for universities to pivot towards more scientific research and innovative technology in the realm of agriculture and forestry. This call was made during the 11th general meeting of the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) Assembly in Kathmandu. The Prime Minister's vision emphasizes the importance of producing skilled manpower for the country's agricultural and forestry sectors.

The Mandate for Research and Technology

According to Prime Minister Dahal, universities should serve as vital nodes for the research, development, and dissemination of advanced technologies. They should be instrumental in training the necessary expert manpower to drive forward the nation's agriculture and forestry sectors.

The Role of Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU)

Established in 2010, AFU was Nepal's first technical university. It was set up to foster study, research, and technological advancements in diverse fields, including agriculture, veterinary medicine, fishery science, animal science, forestry, and natural resource management. The state hopes that AFU will play a significant role in Nepal's agricultural, animal, and forestry sectors by integrating teaching, research, and technology.

The Prime Minister assured ongoing government support for AFU, while also stressing the need for universities to commit to the development of new technology, and facilitate expert manpower production.

Expansion of AFU Affiliates

In alignment with the goal of establishing religious colleges across the country, AFU is proud to announce the operationalization of 8 Colleges of Agriculture, a College of Forestry, and two Agricultural Science Centers in various provinces. The Prime Minister highlighted the completion of an organization and management survey necessary for staff and teacher allocation and promised special government aid for future management.

Strategic Plans and Research Focus

Prime Minister Dahal expects the implementation of AFU's second ten-year strategic plan (2023-2032) prepared for the fulfillment of the university's goals and objectives. He further emphasized the need for expanding research centers and improving the quality and strength of ongoing university programs.

Hetauda Forestry College Progress and Support

The Prime Minister conveyed his delight regarding the initiation of an educational program at Hetauda Forestry College in its own building. He reassured full government support for the program's effective operation, as decided by the Council of Ministers.

Sustainable Development and Technology Adoption

The Prime Minister stressed the need for developing and implementing new technologies for self-sufficiency in agriculture and animal husbandry. He urged the university to focus research on sustainable development and environmental issues, particularly on maximizing domestic wood usage.

Role of the Government of Nepal

Despite limited resources, the government has pledged to continue supporting research activities and provide necessary resources for the university's development. The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the professors and reaffirmed the government's commitment to foster research in agriculture and forestry.

Enhancing Entrepreneurship Experience

Prime Minister Dahal underscored the importance of integrating entrepreneurship training into agricultural education and dissemination. He emphasized the university's role in bringing modern agriculture and forestry technology to farmers and forest consumers.

Promises for Future Support

The Prime Minister ensured the government's help in transferring property from Tribhuvan University to AFU and facilitating manpower management. He urged the university to address the issues mentioned in the General Account report seriously.

Overall, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of implementing decisions taken at the assembly meeting and assured the government's support for the future endeavors of the university.
