Prime Minister Prachanda Emphasizes Research and Innovation in University Education

In a speech given at the 28th convocation ceremony of Kathmandu University, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' emphasized the need for universities to adopt a more research and innovation-oriented approach. With a greater emphasis on experiential learning and practice at the undergraduate level, he believes that this shift will promote higher utilization of resources and bring about substantial change in society.

Prime Minister Prachanda highlighted the significance of prioritizing research and innovation, particularly in postgraduate courses. He emphasized that research should bring about tangible impact and change in society, utilizing resources effectively. The government of Nepal has decided to shift the responsibility of research-related activities from the government to universities, aiming to facilitate study and research at the university level. This move provides an opportunity for professors to contribute directly to the development of the state.

Appreciation for Kathmandu University's Contribution to Quality Education

The Prime Minister expressed his admiration for Kathmandu University's notable contribution over the past 32 years. The university has produced over 41,000 highly skilled graduates, becoming a leader in providing quality education and gaining recognition as one of South Asia's prestigious institutions. The focus on quality, technical expertise, and advanced higher education is crucial in addressing the issue of Nepalese students leaving the country for education and employment opportunities abroad.

Transforming Nepal into an Educational Hub

To counter the rising trade deficit and service trade deficit, the government is dedicated to establishing Nepal as a hub for higher education in various fields, including engineering, medicine, information technology, and environmental science. The draft commercial policy of the government highlights education services as an area with export potential. The expertise and suggestions of experts will play a vital role in realizing this vision.

Preserving Nepali Values and Identity

Recognizing the diversity of students at Kathmandu University, including foreign nationals from more than 55 countries, Prime Minister Prachanda acknowledged the potential of making Nepal an attractive educational hub in South Asia. The university's unique programs, incorporating traditional knowledge and skills, such as Yogic Science and Wellbeing, Crafts and Design, Endogenous Knowledge, and Buddhist Studies, not only help preserve Nepali values and identity but also attract international students interested in studying these subjects.

Contributing to Economic Development and Social Capital

Kathmandu University's research endeavors in areas like green hydrogen production, artificial intelligence, modern agricultural science, glaciology, and health informatics hold significant potential for driving economic development, building social capital, and improving living standards for the general population. By combining heritage and forward-looking knowledge, the university is making a significant and groundbreaking impact.

The Role of Universities as Model Institutions

Prime Minister Prachanda emphasized that universities should operate as model institutions for producing skilled manpower. He urged caution in establishing new universities without adequate resources, as it can lead to problems in higher education, including concerns about quality and credibility. Universities need to be dynamic and agile in providing quality education while addressing the challenges posed by demographic shifts and the migration of students from rural areas. Collaboration between universities and community campuses is essential for effective operation and support.

Implementing Effective Academic Calendars

The Prime Minister acknowledged the need for effective implementation of academic calendars in universities. Timely admissions, scheduled classes, examinations, and prompt publication of results are vital for students' future. The government is committed to creating a solid calendar for higher education and universities, ensuring adherence to strict timelines. Once the national calendar for higher education is prepared, universities can develop their own calendars and implement them promptly.

Promoting Research and Innovation in Universities

Prime Minister Prachanda highlighted that universities serve as living laboratories for research and innovation. These institutions play a vital role in policy-making and conducting research on emerging global issues such as science, technology, sustainable development, and climate change. The Prime Minister expressed his expectation for an active and constructive role from universities in these areas.

Wishing Students a Bright Future and Commending Kathmandu University

In conclusion, Prime Minister Prachanda extended his warmest congratulations to the graduates and their families. He expressed his belief that the technical skills, values, and patriotism instilled in the students during their time at Kathmandu University would positively influence their professional and personal lives. The Prime Minister also commended the parents for their unwavering efforts and sacrifices in supporting their children's education. He expressed confidence that their contributions would be cherished by future generations.

As the convocation ceremony concluded, the Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes to Kathmandu University, envisioning a brighter future for the institution.
