Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Calls for Revision in Tribhuvan University's Vice-Chancellor Appointment Process
In a significant move towards educational reform, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' of Tribhuvan University has directed changes in the selection process for the university's Vice-Chancellor position. This directive was issued during a meeting with Education, Science, and Technology Minister Ashok Kumar Rai, and the University Vice-Chancellor on January 5, 2024.
The Prime Minister highlighted the need for an open and inclusive appointment process. He expressed concerns that the existing advertisement could potentially restrict the selection of qualified candidates. His vision is to welcome talented individuals from around the world to contribute to the reform and advancement of the university.
A particular point of contention was a requirement in the advertisement that asked candidates to submit an 'attested copy of details of at least three years of work in university official positions'. The Prime Minister has instructed that this criterion be removed to ensure a more diverse and qualified applicant pool.
Emphasizing the importance of meritocracy, Prime Minister Dahal urged the elimination of provisions favoring former university officers. He aims to create opportunities for competent and qualified individuals who can bring fresh perspectives and expertise, irrespective of their previous institutional affiliations.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister instructed the Education Minister to concentrate on enhancing the quality of higher education. He stressed that broad standards should be established, allowing any qualified Nepali academic to apply, which is crucial for meaningful reforms in the university.
This directive from the Prime Minister marks a pivotal step in Tribhuvan University's journey towards global educational excellence. It reflects a commitment to inclusivity, quality, and innovation in the higher education sector of Nepal.
