New Height of Mount Everest to Announce Soon:

The government will soon announce the new height of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation has stated that the declaration is being prepared after the work of measuring the height of Everest has been completed.

Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Ministry Janak Raj Joshi informed that all the technical work of measuring the height of Everest has been completed and the height declaration is being prepared. "The work of calculating and processing the height of Mount Everest has been completed," he said, adding that "diplomatic work is being done through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as it is a matter of alignment with China."

"According to a joint statement issued by Nepal and China on the measurement and declaration of the height of Mount Everest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will coordinate and set a date and the height of Mount Everest will be announced accordingly," he said. He said that an initiative is being taken through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to announce the date.

During the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal in September last year, the two countries had agreed to jointly declare the height of Mount Everest. A joint statement issued during the visit said, "Considering Mount Everest as an eternal symbol of friendship between the two countries, the two countries will promote cooperation in various fields, such as climate change and environmental promotion." The two countries will jointly declare the height of Mount Everest and conduct scientific studies.

Director-General of the Survey Department, Prakash Joshi, said that all the technical work related to measuring the height of Everest has been completed and the announcement is being prepared. He said that preparations are being made to declare the height of Everest within a month.

"The work of labeling, gravity, GPS observation of Mount Everest, data processing and error removal has been completed," he said. "Preparations for the announcement are in the final stages."

He informed that discussions are underway with the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation on the date of declaration of height and from which level to what model.

Everest is still 8,848 meters high. The re-measurement of Everest has been started as there may be some decrease in altitude due to the earthquake in 2072 BS and other reasons.

In 1856-57, the then British India Survey of India measured the height of Mount Everest at 8,848 meters. That is why it has been recognized till now.
