The new electricity tariff rate will be implemented from the month of Mangshir, 2078 (November 2021). Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the Electricity Regulatory Commission informed that the new electricity tariff rate will be implemented from Mangsir.
After discussing the proposal made by Nepal Electricity Authority, the commission has implemented the new electricity tariff rate with effect from November. He said that it has been decided that no energy charge will be levied on domestic consumers consuming 5 units to 20 units per month targeting poor citizens and the minimum charge will be only Rs 30.
The commission has informed that around 2.2 million customers will benefit from the service charge of only Rs 30 per month. The commission has reduced the tariff of households by an average of 2.84 percent to increase the consumption of electricity among the households and ensure a fair price of electricity among the consumers.
The commission has reduced the monthly minimum tariff for domestic consumers of 5 amperes, 15 amperes and 30 amperes consuming 151 to 250 units per month from the single-phase by Rs 25 to Rs 100, Rs 125, and Rs 150 respectively.
Similarly, the commission has reduced the energy charges of consumers consuming electricity above 400 units per month by Rs 1 per unit.
The commission has reduced the tariff rate to encourage the use of household appliances such as electric stoves for domestic consumers consuming more than 151 units of electricity per month by taking supply from a single phase to increase domestic consumption.
Similarly, the tariff rate of irrigation customers has also been reduced. This time, the customers of irrigation have got the most benefit, their tariff has been reduced by an average of 40.69 percent. The commission has informed that the energy charge for irrigation class consumers supplied from 230/400 volts has been reduced by 2.05 per unit to 2.25.
The commission said that the customers of the 400-volt three-phase line will now have to pay Rs 10.50 per unit for rain and Rs 11.50 per unit in winter. Earlier, the tariff was Rs 11.50 for consuming up to 400 units and Rs 12 for consuming up to 400 units. The commission has also reduced the tariff rate on in-unit slabs where induction cookers and electrical appliances are used more.
Similarly, the tariff of irrigation customers has also decreased. The commission has decided to reduce the slab to six. The commission claims that this will provide more convenience to the customers who use induction cookers.
Now there will be the first slab of up to 20 units, while the second slab of 21 to 30, 31 to 50, 51 to 100, 101 to 250, and more than 251 units have been established. Now, customers who consume more than 101 units per month have to pay less. The tariff on the above two slabs has been reduced from 50 Paisa to one Rupee per unit.
