Nepal's Human Development Index (HDI) Improved:
Nepal's condition has improved in the Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI Index of 2020 shows that Nepal's position has reached 0.587.
According to a report released by the National Planning Commission late on Sunday due to the Corona epidemic, Nepal's condition has improved from 0.579 in 2018 to moderate human development in 2019. The report shows some progress compared to the previous year.
The report, released by Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel and Planning Commission Vice-Chairman Dr. Pushpa Kandel, focuses on productive transformation and prosperity after upgrading from Least Developed Countries, to 0.566 in 2015 and 0.529 in 2010.
According to the report, in 2019, the average year of school education has reached 5.2, the expected year of school education has reached 12.7, the expected age has reached 69.7 years and the per capita gross national income has reached 2,748 US dollars. Per capita income is above average in Bagmati Province and lowers in other provinces. Bagmati Province has 168.5 while Karnali Province has the lowest at 49.81. Province-2 also has only 53.72.
In the Human Property Index, the lowest is 76 in Province-2 and the highest is 114 in Gandaki Province. In the economic risk index, all except Sudurpaschim Province are at higher risk than the national level. Nepal has 106 and Sudurpaschim Province has 98. The rest of the province has over a hundred.
According to the report, progress has been made in social, economic, and political empowerment in all the three dimensions of the gender sector at 41 percent at the local level, 34.4 percent in the province, 32.7 percent in the House of Representatives and 37.3 percent in the National Assembly. The report goes on to say that per capita gross national income is lower than the threshold of three of the three countries required for promotion from least developed countries to developing countries.
Speaking at the launch of the report, Finance Minister Poudel said that the report has helped to upgrade developing countries in 2022, adding that despite some obstacles, the economy will recover and prosperity will be achieved in time.
Although the Commission has made progress in various dimensions of human development, all stakeholders should take steps to focus on human development in order to implement policies and programs for rapid development and economic development, said Kandel.
Commission member Dr. KP Oli said that based on the report, Nepal needs a lot of reforms after being upgraded to a developing country. Secretary of the Planning Commission Kewal Bhandari said that the report showed a positive trend in human development in the past.
Isaine Medagangoda Lawe, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said the report would be used by federal, provincial, and local bodies.
