Nepal University Formally Announced as Nepal's 14th University.
Nepal University has been officially inaugurated. During an event at the Himalaya Hotel in Lalitpur, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel formally declared the university's establishment.
Nepal University was established as the 14th university in Nepal after the President certified the Nepal University Act 2081 on Ashoj 23. The House of Representatives passed the Nepal University Bill on Bhadra 24, following a proposal by Minister of Education, Science, and Technology Vidya Bhattarai. The proposal was approved by a majority vote.
The bill, introduced in the National Assembly, underwent extensive discussions in the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Information Technology.
According to the University Grants Commission, Nepal now has 14 universities. This university, registered as a private institution, was passed by the National Assembly on Ashad 18. Unlike other universities, the Prime Minister and Minister of Education will not hold official roles. Instead, an academic professional will serve as the Chancellor.
Nepal University will have structural bodies such as the Board of Trustees, Academic and Executive Councils, and Research Centers, along with schools and colleges. Key positions will include Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Dean, Director, and Principal.
The Board of Trustees will be chaired by the Chancellor, and will include the Vice-Chancellor, an academic nominated by the provincial government where the university is located, the head of the local government, one academic representative, and five members (including at least two women) who have contributed to establishing or running universities in Nepal.
The university and its central office will be located outside the Kathmandu Valley in an area designated by the government. Nepal University aims to produce skilled, creative, and competitive human resources through interdisciplinary, high-quality education, research, and innovative learning. Its mission is to foster the generation of new knowledge and contribute to the nation’s development through innovation and creativity.
