Nepal Government Initiates Vocational Training Academy for Global Workforce Development
November 17, 2023, Kathmandu - In a landmark decision, the government of Nepal has announced the operation of a vocational training academy aimed at catering to the manpower requirements of both national and international markets. This strategic move, approved in the cabinet meeting held on November 9, 2023, signifies a major shift in the approach towards skill development and workforce training.
Formation of National Vocational Training Academy Development Committee
As per the National Vocational Training Academy Development Committee Formation Order 2080 BS, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has established a dedicated committee to oversee this initiative. This committee marks a pivotal step in streamlining vocational training at a national level.
Objective: Skilled, Competitive, and Entrepreneurial Manpower
The primary goal of this initiative, as stated by the ministry, is to nurture a workforce that is skilled, competitive, and entrepreneurial. The responsibility of imparting skills to workers, which was previously handled by private entities, will now be managed by this new establishment.
Mandate and Responsibilities
The Council of Ministers has empowered the committee to conduct and manage various training programs. These programs are designed to align with the demands of both national and international labor markets. The Academy will be governed by a board of directors and headed by an executive director, ensuring efficient and effective administration.
Curriculum Development and Skill Assessment
The Academy is charged with identifying training subjects based on labor market demands, developing and implementing training curricula and standards, and conducting skill assessments. It will also handle the grading and certification of its training programs.
Coordination and Recognition
An integral part of the Academy’s role involves coordinating with domestic and international organizations. This includes registering and monitoring external training providers, ensuring policy alignment, and seeking recognition for its training programs from international bodies.
Future Training Programs
In the coming days, the Academy will offer professional and skill training for periods of up to six months. This includes curriculum preparation, skill training execution, skill testing, and certificate issuance.
Implementation and Gazette Publication
The National Vocational Training Academy Development Committee (Establishment) Order 2080 BS, approved by the Council of Ministers, will be published in the gazette for official implementation, as confirmed by the ministry.
This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing the quality and relevance of vocational training in the country, aligning it with the evolving needs of the global labor market.
