National Library of Nepal Goes Digital with Online ISSN Services
Kathmandu, Nepal - September 17, 2023 - The National Library of Nepal has taken a significant leap into the digital age by offering International Serial Standard Number (ISSN) registration for magazines and journals online. This development was announced at a workshop focusing on book and newspaper preservation, marking the 16th Library Day.
Background: A Step into Modernity
The National Library, a government-run institution, has been the official body for ISSN issuance since 2008. To date, the library has successfully allocated ISSNs to 1,551 newspapers and journals. Previously based in Harihar Bhawan, Lalitpur, the library moved to Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, following the devastating earthquake in 2015.
Efficient and High-Quality Service
Suresh Adhikari, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, inaugurated the online ISSN service. Adhikari emphasized his expectation that the new digital service will enhance efficiency and elevate the quality of publications. Dashrath Mishra, the head of the National Library, also affirmed plans to further improve the service.
Future of Nepal's Library System
During the event, Deputy Secretary Pitambar Bhandari expressed the Ministry's commitment to developing an integrated law that will ensure the smooth operation of libraries across the country.
Suresh Kumar Yadav, Head of Keshar Library, contributed to the discourse with a detailed presentation on the current status, opportunities, and challenges facing Keshar Library.
