Malika Rural Municipality Launches Local Curriculum

Unique and Engaging Educational Approach in Malika Rural Municipality, Gulmi, Tamghas

In an innovative move towards education, Malika Rural Municipality in Gulmi, Tamghas, has initiated a local curriculum that is designed for classes one through eight. The local curriculum, launched in a well-attended program, is tailored to encompass topics relevant to the local students, thereby maintaining a significant link with their heritage and environment.

Local Curriculum Highlights

  • The curriculum covers a diverse range of local themes, including local costumes, products, religious beliefs, culture, and language variation across castes.

  • Additionally, the students will also learn about local medicinal herbs, tourist hotspots, and livelihood practices.

  • A unique aspect of the curriculum is the inclusion of tamsuk and other local knowledge skills utilized in daily life, enhancing the students' practical understanding.

  • It is designed in a user-friendly manner to help students grasp information about geography, regions, tourist places, and traditions effortlessly.

This distinct local curriculum is a strategic initiative to counter the growing detachment of students from their local customs, languages, and practices, as noted by administrative officer Bikas Khanal.

Implementation and Recognition

In recognition of the hard work behind this novel educational approach, contributors to the creation of textbooks based on the local curriculum were honored at the launch event. Malika Rural Municipality has learned from the experience of Dhurkot Rural Municipality, which was the first to implement a local curriculum in the Lumbini province from class 1 to 5 since 2077.

This unique curriculum approach is currently in practice at five local levels, with an emphasis on prioritizing the content specific to the local area.

Education in Malika Rural Municipality

Malika Rural Municipality is home to 60 schools, with 53 public and 7 private institutions, catering to approximately seven thousand students. This initiative of a tailored local curriculum is an effort to provide an enriching and engaging educational experience for these students, aiming to root their learning deeply within their local environment and culture.
