KMC Mayor Balendra Instructed Staff and Teachers to Immediate Give Up Political Affiliation

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has instructed the teachers and employees to give up political party affiliation immediately. Balendra Shah, the mayor of the metropolis, issued a statement on Wednesday and warned that the teachers and employees of the metropolis will not give up their political affiliation and take action according to the law.

He clarified that it is not legal for the teachers and employees of the metropolis to be members of any political party, fraternal organization, or voluntary organization in order to promote good governance within the scope of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

In the statement, it is said, "Teachers and employees under the Kathmandu Metropolitan City are earnestly appealed to not to give any kind of membership related to party affiliation or to cancel the membership if they have been given membership.

Teachers and employees under Kathmandu Metropolitan City who have maintained political affiliations as members of political parties, fraternal organizations or voluntary organizations are informed through this announcement to immediately renounce such affiliations and comply with the law.

Shah reminded that no employee of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City can join a political party or organization, engage in political activities or participate in any other political activities as per Section 45 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Employee Service Act, 2077.

Clause (c) of sub-section (2) of Section 14 of the Political Parties Act, 2073 provides that no political party shall grant membership to the incumbent professors, teachers, or employees of institutions owned or controlled by the Government of Nepal, State Government or local level.

In order to implement the said law, in the case of Ajit Bhandari and the office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (Case No. 078-WO-0408), an order has also been issued by the Patan High Court on 2-4-2079.

According to the statement, "Section 45 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Municipality Employees Service Act, 2077 also stipulates that no employee of Kathmandu Metropolitan City may join a political party or organization, engage in political activities or participate in any other political activities."

It is the responsibility of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City as well as every political party, fraternal organization or voluntary organization, and teachers and employees under the Metropolitan City to comply with the said legal system and the order of the Honorable High Court of Patan. '
