Kathmandu Metropolitan City Intensifies Recruitment of City Police
In a bid to strengthen security and order, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is set to expand its city police force by recruiting 100 more individuals. With the current team stretched thin over numerous responsibilities, this move aims to adequately supplement the manpower needs of the city.
Recruitment Efforts & Current Force Capacity
Previously, KMC had shown interest in recruiting from the alternate list of candidates who didn't make the final cut in the recruitment results of Nepal Police and Armed Forces. However, only 35 enrolments came forth from this process, according to City Police Chief, Rajunath Pandey. In an attempt to meet their recruitment target, KMC has now turned towards candidates on the alternate list of the Nepali Army.
Currently, the city police force comprises 316 members, including 165 permanent staff in various ranks from jawan, habaldar, asai, sai, inspector, DSP to SP.
Expanding Duties and Responsibilities
The Metropolitan Police Office of Kathmandu is tasked with several important duties that ensure the smooth functioning and safety of the city. These responsibilities include building security, environment department, Hanumandhoka Darbar area security, traffic and parking management, fire service, PSO, internal administration, road belt management, and litigation and reconciliation. However, due to the vast area of operation, the force often falls short in numbers, and the recruitment drive aims to address this issue.
Maintaining Professionalism and Integrity
KMC has shown zero tolerance towards unprofessional and inhumane behavior towards the public. Seven city police officers who behaved rudely to sidewalk traders were returned to the company that contracted them. In their place, the company is expected to provide new personnel.
At present, KMC has 316 city policemen in service, of which 117 are on a contractual basis through Unique Securities. In November 2022, Unique Securities had agreed to provide 162 recruits to the metropolis, but only 81 met the set criteria.
The recruitment drive reaffirms KMC's commitment to maintaining safety, order, and professionalism in their ranks, ensuring the city remains a secure and pleasant environment for all residents and visitors.
