The Institute of Engineering (IOE) under Nepal's prestigious Tribhuvan University (TU) is poised to overhaul its engineering programs by adjusting the syllabus and the fee structure. This transformative amendment is all set to be implemented from the forthcoming academic year, as revealed by the dean of the institute, Prada.

Upward Fee Revision: A Necessity or Luxury?

Currently, the engineering program stands at a fee of Rs 350,000. However, this figure is projected to rise sharply to a staggering Rs 770,000. This dramatic hike, set in motion in 2053 BS, predicates an annual increase at a rate of 10 percent.

For years, the university continued to conduct the engineering courses at the same rate. But, a lack of cooperation from TU and the economic strains of running the campus on the current fee have justified the increase, according to Dean Prof. Dr. Joshi. "We have been deliberating over the fee hike for the past year, engaging in productive dialogues with students, teachers, and staff members," he stated.

In this context, IOE formed a study committee led by Sushil Bajracharya to methodically revise the fees. The fee augmentation will be contingent on the report generated by this committee. Prof. Dr. Joshi further clarified that the exact percentage increase for the following years remains undetermined.

Innovative Curriculum for a Competitive Edge

Parallel to the fiscal revisions, IOE is gearing up to roll out an updated curriculum for its various engineering disciplines in the next academic session. Dean Prof. Dr. Joshi emphasized that this new curriculum will integrate compulsory internships, market-oriented courses, and practical subjects. He expressed his confidence that these revisions will elevate IOE's education system to a more international level.

It's important to note, however, that these changes in the syllabus and fees will only impact new admissions.

IOE oversees five distinguished campuses: Pulchok Campus, Thapathali Campus, Eastern Campus, Western Campus, and Chitwan Campus. Furthermore, there are 10 affiliated private colleges. These institutions offer a variety of courses, including computer engineering, civil engineering, architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The forthcoming changes at IOE reflect a deep commitment to academic excellence and financial sustainability. While this may initially present challenges for incoming students, the administration is confident that these changes will enhance the quality of education and set their graduates apart in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
