Durbar High School (Bhanu Secondary School): Historical Heritage with an Increasing Number of Students

Durbar High School (Bhanu Madhyamik Vidyalaya) is a historical heritage school located in the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal. It has recently seen an increase in the number of students seeking new admissions, especially in classes 7 to 9. This is due to the school's newly constructed building, clean lunch house, and English medium education, which requires little investment.

Headmaster Sharda Paudel informed that the upper classes have more students than the available seats, as they will receive scholarships for higher education after completing SEE community school. Additionally, students also come for new admissions in the lower classes as well.

The school is preparing to admit new students only after the increase in the number of students. Five compulsory subjects, Nepali, English, Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies, will be based on the syllabus of the current class. Each subject will be assessed with a total of 100 questions with a weightage of 20/20 marks.

Despite selective admission, students from class 7 to 9 have to be divided into three sections, as there is no shortage of students in any class. Before the earthquake, the school had only 71 students, but now it has increased to 591. Thirty teachers are working in the school which was completely damaged by the Gorkha earthquake.

Being a historical and old school, in the early days only children from rich families used to study. At one time, only the children of workers studied in this school, but now the children of government employees and local residents are more attracted to this school.

As the school building is big, there is a shortage of support staff to do the cleaning work. Similarly, based on the number of students, there is a shortage of teachers for related subjects, according to Principal Paudel. The school is also planning to conduct 'Fine Art' classes in collaboration with Lalitkala Campus.

Bhanu Secondary School and Sanskrit Secondary School are currently running under the arm of the school, which was rebuilt in its original form after the earthquake eight years ago. There are 40 classrooms in the four-storey school building built on nine acres of land. The school building was built by the Chinese company Shanghai Construction with the full support of the Chinese government after the earthquake.

Durbar High School (Bhanu Madhyamik Vidyalaya) is one of the two model schools in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, and 89 community schools are currently operating in the city. To run those schools more systematically than others, a budget of 1 crore has been allocated in the current financial year.

Overall, Durbar High School (Bhanu Madhyamik Vidyalaya) is a historical heritage school that has recently seen an increase in the number of students. With its newly constructed building, clean lunch house, and English medium education, it attracts students from various backgrounds. The school is working towards expanding its resources to accommodate the growing number of students.
