Highest Number of Applicants for EPS Korean Language Test
In an unprecedented turnout, over 164,000 individuals in Kathmandu have applied for the Employment Permit System (EPS) language test, aimed at securing employment in South Korea's manufacturing sector. As reported on January 5, 2024, this surge in applications represents a significant interest in overseas job opportunities.
High Demand in the Manufacturing Sector
The EPS Korea Branch, under the direction of Mayan Kandel, revealed that out of the total applicants, 20,522 are candidates for the shipbuilding sector, while a notable majority of 143,800 are aspiring for roles in the broader manufacturing sector. The branch has also confirmed a requirement for 15,800 workers in the productive sector.
Background on EPS Applications
Previously, in July 2023, only 4,000 out of 35,000 participants passed the EPS exam for shipbuilding. Following this, the application for the manufacturing sector was opened. However, a rule preventing participants of the 2023 exams from applying to other fields initially barred 30,000 unsuccessful applicants from reapplying.
Legal Interventions and Increased Participation
A significant development occurred when 18 individuals filed a case in the Patan High Court, challenging the restrictive rule. The court, in its December 5 ruling, allowed these individuals to participate in the manufacturing sector examination. This decision was further extended on December 13, permitting all candidates to apply, irrespective of their previous participation.
Protests and Tragic Outcomes
The application process has not been without controversy. Demands for equal participation rights across different sectors led to protests. In a tragic turn of events, Sujan Rawat and Birendra Shah lost their lives during a demonstration in Lalitpur's Balkumari on December 28, 2023.
This record-breaking number of applications highlights the growing trend among Kathmandu's population to seek employment opportunities abroad, especially in South Korea. The EPS language test has become a pivotal gateway for Nepalese job seekers aspiring to work in the manufacturing sector overseas. The recent legal developments and the unfortunate incidents during the protests underscore the urgency and importance of these opportunities for the local populace.
