Far-Western University Students Embark on an Agricultural Learning Journey to Israel

In a unique initiative, 50 students from the Bachelor of Agricultural Science program at Far-Western University, Nepal, are set to travel to Israel for an 11-month student exchange program. This program, a collaboration between the university and the Embassy of Israel in Nepal, aims to provide students with hands-on experience in modern agricultural technology.

Learning and Earning in Israel

The students will not only continue their studies in Israel but also have the opportunity to earn while learning. This program is designed to ensure that their academic progress is not interrupted, and they will return to Nepal only after submitting their thesis to their home university.

Selection Process and Financial Aspects

The selection of these students was conducted by a team of professors from Sedot Negev College, Israel, in the presence of Hanan Godar, the Israeli Ambassador to Nepal. While students are responsible for their airfare, other expenses will be covered through the collaboration between the university and the embassy.

According to Israel's labor laws, students who perform well can earn more than the minimum wage, potentially earning at least one lakh rupees per month.

Student Perspectives

Students like Luis Rizal and Sushma Regmi view this opportunity as a significant step in their academic and professional journey. Rizal expressed that this program has boosted his self-confidence and provided a better opportunity than he had anticipated. Regmi, on the other hand, believes that this experience will enhance her skills and technical knowledge, which she can later apply in Nepal.

Strengthening Nepal-Israel Relations

This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the diplomatic relations between Nepal and Israel. The Embassy of Israel in Nepal is actively working to establish connections between educational institutions in both countries.

The Need for Modernization in Nepal's Agriculture

Hanan Godar, Israel's ambassador to Nepal, highlighted the stark contrast between the agricultural practices in both countries. While only two percent of Israel's population is involved in agriculture, they export food. In contrast, despite 60 percent of Nepal's population working in agriculture, they still need to import food. Godar emphasized the need for modernization in Nepal's agricultural sector, suggesting that programs like these could be a step in the right direction.

The Journey Ahead

After completing a 280-hour course in Israel, the students will return to Nepal, marking the end of their 11-month journey. This unique program offers them a chance to gain practical experience, earn a living, and contribute to the modernization of Nepal's agricultural sector upon their return.
