Expanding Opportunities for Sanitation Technicians in Nepal

On June 11, 2023, in a prominent event held in Kathmandu, industry leaders emphasized the immense potential and opportunities available to trained sanitation technicians in Nepal and beyond.

International Job Opportunities for Nepalese Technicians

According to the keynote speakers, the world of sanitation services is expansive, offering a wealth of opportunities to trained professionals. Notably, they highlighted that student technicians who are specialized in this field are not limited to job prospects within the country. Their globally recognized training certificates make them eligible for jobs in any sanitation sector worldwide, opening a multitude of international career paths.

Commitment from Local Institutions

This empowering statement was delivered at an event hosted by the Nepal Engineering College (NEC) and Kathmandu University (KU), two of the nation's prominent non-profit educational institutions renowned for higher education. Prof. Dr. Harikrishna Shrestha, NEC Principal, and Prof. Dr. Bhim Prasad Shrestha, KU project head, expressed their belief in the potential contributions these trained individuals can make in the country.

The speakers voiced their readiness to collaborate with the relevant governmental agencies in Nepal to create a conducive environment that would allow these technicians to serve in the country, contributing to its growth and development.

Partnerships for Training Programs

In their shared commitment to enhance the sanitation sector, NEC and KU have been conducting professional training on hygiene at their respective institutions. This initiative has been made possible through the generous financial support of the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation and the coordinated efforts of the IHE organization of Netherlands.

Successful Completion of Training

The event was also organized to celebrate the successful completion of training by 44 participants. The training program, which ran from November 2022 to April 2023, was conducted by NEC and KU. Among the successful participants were 19 individuals, including nine women and 10 men, who completed the comprehensive professional study program in sanitation technology at NEC. KU's program saw 25 successful trainees, including four international students, signifying the global recognition of these programs.

The burgeoning sanitation sector in Nepal promises abundant opportunities for trained professionals, locally and internationally. The sector's growth is significantly supported by institutions such as NEC and KU, fostering skilled manpower and contributing towards Nepal's development in sanitation and hygiene.
