Expanding Healthcare at GP Koirala National Center for Respiratory Diseases

In a significant move towards advancing healthcare in Nepal, the GP Koirala National Center for Respiratory Diseases is set to become Asia's largest respiratory treatment facility. This initiative follows a bilateral agreement during the state visit of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to India in 2017.

Development Plans

The development plan for the center involves a substantial expansion, with the construction of a modern infrastructure aimed at housing a total of 1,000 beds. This expansion includes a 300-bed specialty respiratory hospital supported by the Government of India and a 700-bed general hospital spearheaded by the Nepal government.

Current Status and Services

Currently, the center operates a 50-bed general hospital and has commenced providing specialized respiratory care. The facility is staffed by over 100 healthcare professionals, including specialists in various fields such as intensive care, surgery, and orthopedics.

Strategic Location and Impact

Located in Shuklagandaki municipality-5, Belchautara, Tanahun district, the center benefits from a strategic location that caters to patients from multiple districts including Tanahun, Kaski, Gorkha, Lamjung, and Nawalpur. Approximately 300 patients receive medical attention at the facility daily, with 80 percent of these patients covered by insurance.

Historical Significance

Originally established as Setiganga Community Hospital, the facility was renamed and repurposed to honor the late Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, recognizing his political contributions. The transformation from a community hospital to a national healthcare center was propelled by financial challenges and the subsequent takeover by the Government of Nepal in 2073 BS.

With its expansion, the GP Koirala National Center for Respiratory Diseases is poised to lead a significant leap in Nepal's healthcare sector, enhancing the quality of life and accessibility of medical services for its population.
