The cultural tapestry of Nepal's Far West (Sudurpashchim) has been intricately woven into the pages of a new book titled 'Kali-Karnali's Folklore and Culture,' authored by the renowned Deuda song singer Yagyaraj Upadhyay. Known for his famous rendition of 'Rai Jhuma,' Upadhyay's work was officially launched at the Nepal Academy, embellished with a vibrant cultural tableau and a host of invited guests.
The book is the culmination of nearly 25 years of research and dedication, and it was unveiled by noted culturalists Jagman Gurung and Veena Paudyal, along with writers Subhash Chandra Bhandari and Navraj Lamsal. Spanning 984 pages, the book has been lauded as an encyclopedia of the region's rich folk heritage.
'Kali-Karnali's Folklore and Culture' delves into the various forms of folk literature and traditions of the Far West and Karnali regions, preserving them in their authentic essence. It also explores the unique customs and cultural practices of these areas. Culture expert Gurung praised Upadhyaya for undertaking an initiative to document cultural elements that had not yet been accomplished by state efforts, marking a significant achievement for the preservation of Nepali cultural roots.
Veena Paudyal emphasized the book's value as a collectible, capturing the essence of the society's folklore through proverbs, anecdotes, folk tales, sagas, deudas, and rhymes—elements that are often elusive in the mainstream narratives of social and cultural life.
During the book launch, held at Pragya Pratishthan in Dublin, speakers described the event as a significant cultural milestone. Writer and journalist Lamsal drew parallels between Upadhyaya's work and the Bhagavad Gita, underscoring its potential to educate and influence future generations about societal and cultural heritage. Lamsal highlighted the book's deep connection to the nation's soul and cultural existence.
The launch event was not only a literary celebration but also a cultural showcase, with Upadhyaya himself performing his beloved song 'Raizhu' and various cultural groups from the far west presenting traditional performances such as Deuda, Chhalo, Hori, among others.
Published by Bookhill, 'Kali-Karnali's Folklore and Culture' is priced at NPR 3,000 and stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and diversity of Nepali culture.
