Devghat Rural Municipality Launched "We Will Improve Our School"
To improve the educational quality of community schools, a campaign titled "We Will Improve Our School" has been launched in Devghat Rural Municipality, Tanahun. With the main slogan "Good Governance, Responsible and Capable Management in Schools," the Community School Management Committee Federation of Nepal Devghat Rural Municipality Committee has initiated this campaign.
The committee has stated that the campaign has been started to enhance the quality development of community schools by increasing the ownership of teachers, parents, students, and stakeholders in improving the educational quality. The campaign has been launched to prevent the government's investment from going to waste due to the declining quality of community schools, resulting in reliance on private schools, according to Dr. Surendra Prasad Shrestha, the chairman of the Community School Management Committee Federation of Nepal Devghat Rural Municipality Committee. Dr. Shrestha mentioned, "We have started the campaign because traditional teaching methods and a lackadaisical approach have not yielded the results commensurate with the government's investment."
He informed that steps for improvement have been taken in collaboration with the School Management Committee, Teacher-Parent Association, and teachers. He suggested that the use of smart boards and smart TVs with the help of the internet should be implemented for teaching and learning in community schools, as the number of students is declining due to weak learning outcomes, and teachers have been advised to take training for capacity building. Dr. Shrestha further stated that the School Management Committee, Teacher-Parent Association, and teachers have been advised to instill trust in parents by providing quality education in community schools.
Til Bahadur Thapa, chairman of Devghat Rural Municipality, said that the municipality is providing support and cooperation to make the committee's campaign successful. Chairman Thapa mentioned that discussions and training programs on improvement have been conducted for the principals of community schools, the chairpersons of the School Management Committee, and the chairpersons of the Teacher-Parent Association within the municipality. Chairman Thapa informed that preparations are being made to conduct teaching and learning using smart boards in at least one school in each ward to support this campaign.
Chairman Thapa informed that although the government has transferred the ownership of schools to the community, termed as community schools, parents have not been serious about improvement, which led to the implementation of a parent awareness education program. According to Thapa, an integrated education program has been implemented in four schools since last year to improve the education of community schools. Under the integrated program, education, health, and agriculture have been taken together. The school will run vegetable, grain, and fruit farming under agriculture, provide information about communicable and non-communicable diseases under health, and conduct training for sports teachers on yoga and physical exercise.
The committee has stated that awareness programs will be conducted in all 34 schools in Devghat Rural Municipality under the campaign. On Friday, the committee conducted an awareness program at Kalika Secondary School in Devghat-5. The program discussed ways to improve the educational quality of community schools.
Participants emphasized that the dilapidated physical infrastructure, lack of drinking water, toilets, primary health care, playgrounds, political interference in community schools, lack of libraries, lack of coordination among parents, school administration, and management committees, and lack of effective monitoring from the local level are obstacles to improving the quality of community schools. Bishnu Bhakta Nyaupane, chairman of the Community School Management Committee Federation of Nepal Tanahun, mentioned that coordination is ongoing with the municipality as it is necessary to take this campaign to all the municipalities of Tanahun.
