Tamakosi Rural Municipality in Dolakha has experienced a decline in the number of students attending school, leading to a surplus of large and well-equipped school buildings that are becoming increasingly useless. The decrease in student enrollment is largely due to migration abroad, as young people are moving to cities and leaving rural areas behind. The lack of students has become a problem in schools throughout the municipality, with fewer students in lower classes and fewer students overall.
According to Education Regulations, there should be 45 students in a class, but many schools are far from reaching this number. For example, Janajagriti Secondary School, which operates up to 12th grade in Ward No. 5, has a total of 51 students, with less than 10 students in the lower grades. Gupteshwar Secondary School, which operates in Ward No. 4, also has a shortage of students in both upper and lower classes.
Principal Dol Bahadur Basnet has expressed concern about the decline in student enrollment, stating that the danger of closing the school has increased. Another school, Janakalyan Primary School, is also struggling with decreasing enrollment, with zero students in Class 3 this year.
The education coordinator of the municipality, Menuka Bastola, has stated that even the primary-level schools may have to be turned into child development centers due to the lack of students. These developments paint a bleak picture of the future of education in Tamakosi Rural Municipality and highlight the need for solutions to reverse this trend.
