Captain Selection Exercise Conducted in Motherland Secondary School, Pokhara
In an effort to familiarize students with the election process, Motherland Secondary School in Pokhara recently organized a captain selection exercise. The event, held on Monday, was coordinated by the Department of Social Studies and aimed to provide practical education on the prevailing election system.
Students from classes 4 to 10 actively participated in the exercise, taking on the roles of both voters and candidates. The school principal, Narayan Baral, emphasized that the objective of the election was to promote the holistic development of students through theoretical and practical learning.
Gurudatta Dawadi, the Head of the Department of Social Studies, highlighted that this was the first initiative to select a captain at the school level. After extensive preparations spanning 10 days, various aspects such as the voters' list, ballot papers, student campaign materials, classroom arrangements, and identity cards for the candidates were meticulously organized. The students themselves actively engaged in campaigning and sought votes from their peers.
Distinguished guests including School Director Tribhuvan Sharma, Das Jod Doi Incharge Narayan Acharya, and State Election Office Information Officer Rudra Neupane expressed their appreciation for the program, considering it an excellent opportunity to educate and engage students in the process of electing representatives at the school level.
The election took place over two days, with students from classes 7 to 10 casting their votes on Monday, followed by participation from students in grades 4 to 6 on Tuesday. To support the election process, the necessary materials such as paper bags, swastika stamps, and secret voting bars were provided by the office of the state election commission.
Sunil Suwal, a member of the social department, assumed the role of the chief election commissioner, while Gurudatta Dawadi served as the chief observer. The program was inaugurated by Humnath Parajuli, the Chief of Provincial Election Commission Gandaki, who also took the opportunity to enlighten the students about the election system in Nepal. Parajuli commended the school for its commitment to implementing such an election system.
During the exercise, students voted for class captains under the first-past-the-post election system, whereas for the school captain, they utilized a proportional election system, allowing all students to cast their votes on proportional ballots. Anand Sharma, an election officer and member of the social studies department, announced that the results for both class captains and the school captain would be disclosed soon after the vote counting process concludes.
