Basanta Bahadur Kunwar Becomes Nepal's New Inspector General of Police (IGP)

Basanta Bahadur Kunwar has been appointed as the 30th Inspector General of Police in Nepal, replacing Dhiraj Pratap Singh, who retired on March 24, 2023. Kunwar, who is known for his professionalism, honesty, and courage, joined the Nepal Police Service in 1995 and was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police on July 1, 2022.

Professional and Educational Background

Inspector General Kunwar received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tribhuvan University. He has also completed several national and international training programs, including human rights and law enforcement, conflict management, crime management, and prevention of gender-based violence and HIV AIDS.

Achievements and Awards

Kunwar has received numerous awards for his excellent service, including the Suprabal Janaseva Shri, Gorkha Dakshinbahu 4th, United Nations Union Medal, and Disaster Victim Door Medal, among others. He was also selected as the best district police chief in the inter-province police performance evaluation in 2016.

Work Experience

Throughout his career, Kunwar has worked in various positions across Nepal and abroad. He has held positions such as District Police Chief of Manang, Gorkha, and Dhading, Central Police Spokesperson, and Chief of Police of Madhesh Province. He has also worked in the United Nations Federal Mission in Sudan and Liberia.

Promotion to Inspector General of Police

Kunwar was promoted to Additional Inspector General of Police on March 20, 2023, and was subsequently appointed as the new Inspector General of Police on March 24, 2023. He will officially take charge on March 26, 2023.
