Education Revolution in Bagmati Rural Municipality, Makwanpur: Pioneering Compulsory and Free Education

In a historic educational stride, the Bagmati Rural Municipality of Makwanpur has declared itself as a compulsory and free education zone. This move, marking a first for the Bagmati Province, epitomizes the federal government's vision to achieve nationwide accessibility to mandatory and free education within the next 2085 years.

Promoting Equality in Education across Bagmati Province

As part of this extensive campaign, plans are in place to roll out compulsory and free education to 11 local levels of Bagmati province in the current academic session. This ambitious initiative has been organized by Bagmati Rural Municipality and supported by the Education Development Directorate of Bagmati Province.

The rural municipality was officially declared a compulsory and free education zone in a program held at the Bagmati Rural Municipality office premises. The organizers further stressed the need to enroll the remaining out-of-school children in schools close to their homes.

Discovering the Scope of Compulsory Education

Following a school survey conducted as part of the compulsory and free education program (supported by the federal government's conditional grant), it was revealed that there are 285 school-going children currently out of school. The aim is to change this scenario and ensure all children, aged four to 14, are enrolled in school as per the Compulsory and Free Education Act 2075.

Education with Added Benefits

Under the program, the government plans to provide each student with 400 rupees per annum, in addition to school supplies, textbooks, and clothes. Schools with ample resources can offer more than this base amount.

Expanding the Reach of Free Education

Several municipalities and rural municipalities in Bagmati Province, including Gosainkund of Rasuwa, Dudhauli Municipality of Sindhuli, Mahalakshmi Municipality of Lalitpur, Bethanchok and Khanikhola Rural Municipality of Kavre, Dhunibensi Municipality and Galchi Rural Municipality of Dhading, Bagmati Rural Municipality of Makwanpur, and others have joined the compulsory and free education movement. The goal is to make this initiative a universal standard across the province.

Action Beyond Announcements

At the announcement program of Bagmati Rural Municipality, notable personalities like the Minister of Social Development of Bagmati Province Kumari Muktan, Member of Provincial Assembly Prem Bahadur Pulami, Rural Municipality Chairman Sarkes Ghalan, among others, stressed that compulsory and free education should extend beyond mere declarations.

Currently, around eight thousand students are enrolled in 50 public schools within Bagmati Rural Municipality, and with the new declaration, many more are expected to join, helping shape a brighter, more educated future.
