Apollo 11 pilot Michael Collins Dies at Age 90:
Apollo 11 pilot Michael Collins, who was also the first astronaut Neil Armstrong, has died at the age of 90. He is a member with three astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, who made the first successful voyage to the moon in 1969. Family members have informed that he passed away on Wednesday due to cancer.
While Collins' fellow passengers Neil and Buzz were walking on the moon, he was not able to walk on the moon. While Neil and Aldrin were walking on the moon, Collins was waiting for them alone for about 28 hours.
Collins played the role of 'Command Module Pilot' in space travel. Although he had the opportunity to walk on the moon, he did not descend from Apollo 11.
Collins was born in Rome in 1930. His father, James L. Collins, was a major general in the U.S. Army. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1952, Collins enlisted in the Air Force. Where he became a fighter pilot. He graduated a year after Aldrin.
He applied to NASA in 1962 to become the first American pilot to orbit the Earth. But he was re-elected only in 1963. He was in the third group of astronauts under NASA.
NASA announced Collins, Armstrong, and Aldrin as crew members of Apollo 11 on January 9, 1969.
