AI Impact on Language, Literature, and Media Discussed

Experts, intellectuals, and journalists from various fields residing in the United States have expressed concerns that Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has been evolving in recent years, will have a serious impact on language, literature, and media.

They stated that various contents created through the use of AI pose challenges to creativity and authenticity.

Addressing an intellectual discussion program titled “The Place of Language, Literature, and Press in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” organized by the International Nepali Literary Society (INLS), former Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of INLS, Dr. Shyam Karki, said that although the use of AI has made language, literature, and media more convenient, it may also allow creators who have not invested effort and dedication to become established, which is concerning.

Maryland State Delegate Dr. Harry Bhandari remarked that if the content prepared by AI is used in drafting a state bill, it could lead to complexities in the government’s regulation and supervision process. He further added that although AI may facilitate research in language, literature, and the press, relying on it too much might cause difficulties.

At the event, Gandaki Province Press Registrar Bimala Bhandari expressed happiness, saying that this time the United Nations Forum helped her learn more about the impact of AI on women. Emphasizing the need for in-depth discussion in the media sector on this subject, she urged that the latest knowledge gained abroad should be made useful for the homeland.

Writer Tirtha Pandey expressed concern that such topics could influence literature and creativity, and those who do not understand the essence of poetry might end up becoming poets.

Journalist Madhukar Adhikari said that while language, literature, and communication sectors should utilize scientific technology, it must be integrated with creative consciousness and capability.

Professor Dr. Krishna Bista of Morgan State University said AI should be embraced as a useful tool, but it is essential to examine its factual structure when used.

Journalist Gautam Dahal emphasized the need to study AI to make it beneficial in journalism. He expressed confidence that the media sector would adapt itself from the era of litho machines to the age of AI.

During the program, personalities like Bishnu Baral, NRN's Durga Prasad Shrestha, lyricist and INLS Maryland Chapter Secretary Sahadev Koirala, and Amar Chhantyal, among others, expressed their views.
