Great Himalayan Trail Trek Begins

Great Himalayan Trail Trek Begins: A team comprising 12 women and one man has started a 100-day trek on Nepal’s Great Himalayan Trail (GHT), one of the world’s longest and most challenging trekking routes, from Monday, 17th March 2025.

To promote the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) among global tourists and entrepreneurs, a team of 12 Nepali women and one man has embarked on this trekking campaign starting today. The journey begins in Phungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung in Koshi Province, reaching the base camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga in Ghunsa. It will conclude in Darchula of the Far-Western Province after 100 days.

The approximately 1,700 km foot trail passes through the foothills of 17 Himalayan districts. Mountaineer Maya Gurung is leading the trek from Sindhupalchok. Her team includes 11 women and one man from Dang.

Saraswati Tamang, Sangita Tamang, Barsha BK, Sangita Bishwakarma, Anisha Shrestha, Ranjita Lama, Shanti Thing Tamang, Srishti Tamang, Manmaya Tamang, Deepa Lamichhane, and Pramita Sapkota are among the participants in this adventurous trek from Sindhupalchok. Sundar Kumar Chaudhary, 65, from Dang, is also part of the team. The group consists of 24 members, including 11 male assistants.

According to team leader Gurung, the trekkers manage the entire cost. She stated that the estimated cost per person for the 100 days will exceed 1.5 million rupees.

The Great Himalayan Trail covers potential tourist destinations from Eastern Nepal’s Kanchenjunga to Far-Western Darchula. The route is divided into 10 segments, including:

  1. Kanchenjunga Region

  2. Makalu-Barun

  3. Everest-Rolwaling

  4. Helambu-Langtang

  5. Ganesh Himal-Manaslu

  6. Annapurna and Mustang

  7. Dolpa

  8. Jumla

  9. Humla

  10. Far-West Nepal
