Celebrating World Youth Skills Day: Enhancing Socio-Economic Status

World Youth Skills Day, observed every year on July 15, aims to enhance the socio-economic status of youth globally. In Nepal, this day is celebrated with various programs to highlight the importance of skill development among young people.

UN Initiative

In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed July 15 as World Youth Skills Day. The goal is to address the rising trend of unemployment and the gap between education and employment opportunities.

Youth Participation in Nepal

  • Active Engagement: Youth in Nepal are significantly involved in the country's economic, social, political, and educational sectors.
  • Agriculture and Labor: There is a strong presence of young people in agriculture and labor sectors.
  • Urban Migration: Many youths are moving to cities and migrating abroad in search of education, jobs, and better living conditions.

Current Statistics

  • According to the 2078 BS census, 42.56% of Nepal's population is aged 16 to 40 years.
  • Despite representing nearly half of the population, the youth workforce faces challenges due to inadequate support from the state.

Conclusion

World Youth Skills Day is an important event that brings attention to the challenges faced by young people in finding suitable employment. By recognizing and addressing these issues, we can work towards improving the socio-economic conditions of the youth, ensuring a brighter future for the next generation.
