8th National Astronomy Olympiad 2021:
National Astronomy Olympiad (NAO) is an early-stage talent hunt program for school students in Nepal. It’s an annual program for junior (class 8-10) and senior (class 11-12) students in Nepal providing an opportunity to learn communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and critical writing for their personal growth to support their academic career in STEAM field in future.
The program has three stages namely the first round (entrance exam), second round (pre-closed camp), and third-round (closed camp) respectively which will be held between January -July of each year.

Each year this competition creates a national merit list for the regional and international astronomy Olympiads. Between July-December, selected students will get an opportunity to participate in International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO), and Asian-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad.

How to apply for NAO2021?
- Download National Astronomy Olympiad (NAO) 2021 Application Form and fill in carefully with your motivation to participate in the competition (this section carries 5 marks!).
- Pay the registration fee: NRs 1,000/- (One Thousand Rupees only) using QR code in the form. Please write your name/olympiad while doing payment
- Collect your Admit Card before the first round of exams! (Details about the collection will be posted on our website).
- Submit the duly filled application form, photocopies of SEE mark-sheet (For Senior Category) or BLE or class 7 mark-sheet ( for those who are in class 8) (For Junior Category), character certificate, and payment slip to one of our representative near you.

Students must submit their application to one of them and appear for the first stage exam at their respective province. For special cases, students can submit in one province and attend exams in another province only if his/her request is approved by the NASO office.
Who can apply for NAO2021?
- Students who are currently studying at class 8-10 or equivalent and less than 15 years by January 1, 2021, for IAO and by December 31, 2021, for IOAA Jr years are eligible for the Junior Category.
- Students who are currently studying at High School or equivalent and between of age less than 18 years by January 1, 2021, for IAO and less than 20 years by June 30, 2021, for IOAA are eligible for the Senior Category
- Gap year students who are below 20 years by June 30, 2021, for IOAA only are eligible for the Senior Category
How to prepare for NAO2021?
- Students first need to identify eligibility for either the junior or senior category.
- There will be three rounds in the National Astronomy Olympiad (NAO): First Round (Entrance/Province Level), Second Round (Pre-closed Camp/National Level), and Third Round (Closed Camp)
- Students must be a part of the National Astronomy Olympiad (NAO) to be eligible for the further round or any other opportunities in 2021.
- Students who show good performance at the Entrance/Province Level will be selected for the Second Round/National Level.
- Students selected for the second round/National Level (pre-closed camp) will go through several hands-on tasks and only good performing students will be selected for the third round/ (closed camp).
- Students will have classes on theoretical astrophysics, observational astronomy, and data analysis. A merit list is created based on the performance of the students in the final exam as well as overall performance during the closed camp.
- The highest scorers in both junior and senior categories will be announced as the absolute winners of the NAO2021 and will receive trophies, certificates, and medals.
- All the participants from the closed camp will be provided certificates as per their merit and opportunity to participate at IOAA, IAO, IOAA Jr, APAO, etc per their merits.
- Information of the opportunity to participate in the international and regional olympiads will be circular to the closed camp participants at first.
What after NAO2021?
- Students will get exposure as per their merits. Featured in media and provide an opportunity for their strong community engagement through our outreach programs.
- Students will get an opportunity to attend international olympiads as per their merits.
- Students will be facilitated for the scholarship opportunities for their higher studies in Nepal and abroad based on their merits.
