21st National Paddy Day and Planting Festival 2081 to Be Celebrated
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is set to celebrate the 21st National Paddy Day and Planting Festival 2081 with various programs. With the main theme "Climate-Friendly Agriculture, Increase in Paddy Production," the event will be marked on Asar 15 through numerous activities, as announced by the Department of Agriculture. Various organizations from both the public and private sectors will celebrate this day with paddy planting events.
Significance of Paddy Day
Paddy plays a crucial role in revitalizing the national economy. National Paddy Day has been celebrated since 2061 BS. Every Asar 15 is observed as Paddy Day and Planting Festival, with different themes set based on the country's needs and priorities.
Traditions on Asar 15
On Asar 15, Nepalis traditionally engage in paddy planting and enjoy yogurt and beaten rice in the fields. Even those not involved in farming celebrate at home by eating yogurt and beaten rice. The belief is that eating these foods after planting rice brings good fortune, so many people join others in the fields, enjoying the festivities and the tradition of throwing mud. Singing traditional planting songs and working in the fields is another highlight of this day.
Preparations for Planting
Leading up to Asar 15, farmers are busy preparing their fields. Workers, including plowers and helpers, are occupied with tasks such as aligning the furrows and making the rows. The planters, well-dressed for the festival, are seen either cutting seeds in the beds, washing them, or preparing the rows in the fields.
This year's celebration aims to highlight the importance of paddy to Nepal's economy while promoting climate-friendly agricultural practices.
