Program Overview

The PhD in Education program offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education at Nepal Open University (NOU) is designed to prepare students for careers as researchers, scholars, leaders, and practitioners in various academic fields, including English education, linguistics, Nepali education, ICT in education/e-learning, language and literacy, educational management, educational leadership, health education, indigenous knowledge, and inclusive education. This advanced professional study program encourages leadership and scholarship in chosen areas of education.

Program Objectives

The primary objective of the PhD in Education program is to prepare individuals for careers in research and teaching in the evolving field of education. PhD candidates are expected to achieve high academic and research standards, conducting independent, original research that advances theory and practice in education.

Program Rationale

The program aims to meet the needs of researchers, theorists, and practitioners who seek to deepen their understanding of various educational fields through rigorous theoretical and empirical study. The curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation for understanding education, addressing complex educational challenges, and cultivating perspectives on national, regional, and global educational issues.

Program Modality

Selected PhD candidates will work under designated supervisors through face-to-face (in-person/physical) sessions and/or supplementary modes.

Learning Sessions and Seminars

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FOSSED) can organize seminars and learning sessions based on the demands of PhD candidates' research projects. These may incorporate complex research methods in educational programs and seminars as required.

Duration of the Program

The PhD program duration is 3 to 6 years. Candidates are expected to submit their thesis after three years from the date of enrollment. The maximum period allowed to complete the PhD is six years. Failure to submit the thesis within this period will result in cancellation of registration, requiring re-registration by fulfilling all PhD registration procedures.

Salient Features

Comprehensive Entrance Exam (CEE)

The evaluation of PhD applicants by FOSSED consists of 150 marks, divided into the following components:

  1. Admission Test (100 marks, 3 hours)

    • Objective Questions: Verbal Ability and General Awareness & Logical Reasoning (25 marks each)
    • Subjective Questions: Research Methodology and General Content of Education (25 marks each)
  2. Evaluation of Statement of Research Purpose/Intention (25 marks)

    • Evaluated by at least two experts based on predefined criteria.
  3. Defence and Interview (25 marks)

    • For candidates who pass the written test and evaluation of the research statement, focusing on knowledge of content, research methods, skills, attitude, and commitment to PhD research.

Eligibility

To be eligible for direct enrollment in the PhD program, applicants must:

  • Have at least a second division or a CGPA of 2.7 at the Master’s level with a minimum of three years of teaching experience at recognized universities or equivalent professional experience.
  • Have an MPhil degree with at least a second class or a CGPA of 3.3 at the MPhil level with a minimum of three years of teaching experience at recognized universities or equivalent professional experience.
  • Have a paper published as the principal author in national-level journals recognized by the UGC Nepal.

Enrollment is subject to entrance/admission tests and successful defence of the research purpose and interview.

Admission Criteria

Applicants must apply to the Dean of FOSSED with the following:

  • A completed application form
  • A handwritten Statement of Research Purpose/Intention (minimum 2000 words) including:
    • Area of the proposed research/topic
    • Research problem
    • Rationale/practical justification
    • Preliminary approach for conducting the research

The Statement of Research Purpose/Intention carries 25% of the total marks in the evaluation. Applicants must also successfully complete all tests administered by FOSSED.

Evaluation and Admission Process

  • The Faculty Research Committee (FRC) conducts an entrance test to assess knowledge and skills.
  • Applicants may be required to demonstrate qualifications and preparedness through additional work or examinations as determined by the FRC.
  • The FRC ensures the subject can be effectively studied within FOSSED and finalizes enrollment based on resource availability.

Grading System

NOU adopts a four-point (4.0) absolute letter grading system for graduate-level courses:
