Overview
The current scarcity of competent laboratory health professionals has been recognized by the Government of Nepal especially in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. With the aim of fulfilling the national need of workforce of graduate-level laboratory personnel, MBAHS, through its Department of Laboratory Medicine, made adequate preparations for running Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc. MLT) program in the academic year 2077/78. The entry requirements and admission process in this program will be as per the rules, regulations, and guidelines set by the Medical Education Commission (MEC).
MBAHS has developed its curriculum for the BSc. MLT program with the expertise of eminent leaders in the field of Laboratory Medicine and in reference to the curricula of programs currently being offered in Nepal and abroad. The curriculum of BSc. MLT program has been ratified by the Executive Council of MBAHS. The curriculum is designed to produce competent graduate-level laboratory health professionals with focus being placed not only on the knowledge building process but also on the various skills deemed necessary for the laboratory technologist of the 21st century. Phlebotomy skills practiced on manikins will prepare our students in safe-handling of real patients. Practice sessions in communication skills will assist our students in becoming better communicators, good team leaders, and patient-friendly laboratory professionals. The curricular focus on molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology will prepare our students in understanding the current advances these areas are bringing in the field of laboratory medicine and a better understanding of these areas will also broaden their career choices in the future.
The course of study for the BSc. MLT program shall extend over a period of eight semesters (four academic years) with academic activities spanning over first seven semesters (three and half academic years) and mandatory internship posting in the last semester (half academic year).
It has committed itself to become a center for excellence in laboratory medicine education and research and be a leader in the field of medical laboratory sciences with the objective of strengthening the health care of the country.

PROGRAMME DURATION
A B.Sc.MLT programme at MBAHS takes eight semesters (four years) to complete, including an internship.

FUTURE PLANS
The Department of Laboratory Medicine plans to expand its current pool of faculty members in an annual basis for full-fledged operation of its BSc MLT program.
The Department of Laboratory Medicine also plans to offer the following post-graduate level courses in the academic year 2079/80.
- Masters in Medical Biochemistry
- Masters in Medical Microbiology
- PhD in Medical Biochemistry
- PhD in Medical Microbiology
Other relevant academic programs will be offered by the Department of Laboratory Medicine after feasibility studies.
The Department of Laboratory Medicine will upgrade its clinical services by providing more tests and timely dispatch of reports. The existing infrastructure will also be expanded as per the plan of MBAHS.
