Overview
PhD in Zoology at Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University
Course Overview:
The PhD program in Zoology at the Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University, is designed for individuals who aim to pursue a career in teaching, research, and advanced knowledge in the field of Science and Technology. The program emphasizes academic excellence and original research contributions to scientific theory and/or experimentation.
Duration:
The duration of the PhD program varies based on the enrollment status of the researcher: (a) Full-time researchers: The PhD thesis of full-time researchers must be submitted after the completion of three years of registration. In exceptional cases with evidence of outstanding work and standard publications, the thesis may be recommended for submission after two years of registration. If the candidate fails to submit the thesis within five years of registration, the registration will be considered automatically canceled. (b) Part-time researchers: The PhD thesis of part-time researchers should be submitted after completion of five years from the date of registration. The thesis must be submitted within seven years of registration, and failure to do so will result in automatic cancellation of the registration. This rule also applies to part-time researchers who were enrolled before the amendment of regulations of the PhD program in 2071. Full-time researchers dedicate their entire time to research work and may take leave from their job, while part-time researchers balance research work with other commitments.
Fee Structure:
The registration and monthly fees for part-time researchers are twice that of full-time researchers. However, full-time faculty members of Tribhuvan University receive a 50% waiver on the monthly fee.
Re-Registration:
If a candidate has substantially worked but failed to submit the thesis as per the specified rule, they can request re-registration on the same topic and under the same supervisor. Re-registration can be obtained by submitting a fresh application to the Central Department within a month of the registration expiry. In such cases, the candidate can submit the thesis within two years but not before six months of re-registration for full-time researchers. For part-time researchers, the thesis must be submitted within three years from the date of re-registration. Failure to submit the thesis within the specified timeframe will result in automatic cancellation of the re-registration. The fee for re-registration is double the normal registration fee for both cases.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for enrollment and registration in the PhD program in Zoology, a candidate must have secured at least a second division in MSc in Zoology from Tribhuvan University or any other university recognized by Tribhuvan University.
Admission Criteria:
Enrollment and registration process:
- The candidate interested in enrolling in the PhD program must apply to the concerned Central Department where they intend to work on a subject related to their research.
- The application form, available from the Central Department of the Institute of Science and Technology (IOST), should be accompanied by the required processing charge.
- The candidate can obtain the application form in the months of January and July from the Central Departments of IOST. The application must include a research proposal, CVs of the candidate, supervisor, and co-supervisors, a list of publications, recommendation of the supervisor, a no-objection letter from the employer, and an assurance letter of study leave (for full-time research candidates).
- The Central Department Research Committee (CDRC) evaluates the research proposal and application. The candidate is required to defend the proposal at the Central Department to demonstrate adequate knowledge in the proposed field of study.
- The CDRC certifies that the subject offered by the candidate can be pursued within the department, another concerned department, or a recognized research institute.
- After the CDRC recommendation, the application is forwarded to the Research Committee of IOST within three months.
- The Research Committee of IOST organizes a meeting to approve the CDRC's recommendation. The Dean's Office informs the concerned heads, institutes, candidate, and supervisor about the decision within two months. If approved, the candidate must register with IOST.
- The candidate receives a provisional registration for one year, during which they must prove their research ability. After receiving a recommendation from the CDRC, the Research Committee of IOST considers the candidate as a PhD student.
- The title of the PhD thesis is provisional at the time of registration, and it is finalized six months before thesis submission, approved by the Research Committee after CDRC's recommendation.
- If approved by the Research Committee, the candidate completes the registration process by paying the required registration and other fees decided by the Research Committee. The fees are charged until the thesis is finally submitted.
Additional Information:
- A PhD student is required to attend courses and seminars organized by the concerned Department (CDRC).
- During the PhD research period, a student should not undertake any responsibility without the approval of CDRC, except for research-related tasks.
- Enrolling for any other degree during the PhD research period is not allowed.
- If a candidate violates any regulations or demonstrates unsatisfactory progress, their registration may be canceled.
- The Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST) can conduct the PhD program under the research guidelines of IOST, forwarding applications and theses to IOST for approval.
