Kanya Mandir Secondary School

Established in 2003 BS (1947 AD), Kanya Mandir Secondary School stands as a testament to the progress of girls education in Nepal. As the first public girls' school in the country, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of Nepal. Kanya Mandir School is strategically located in wards 25 and 17 of Mahanagara Palika, under Constituency No. 7 of Kathmandu District. It extends to the east side of Chhatrapati Chowk and the northwest tol of Nyokha Tol. The school is surrounded by a serene, clean, and green environment, including the historical heritage site, Ikhapokhari.

The school was founded on 14th Chaitra 2003 at Bhajanpati in Nyukha tol, with 13 girls students. The founding members, Narayan Bahadur Shrestha (Saila Dai), Kedarnath Neupane, Krishnaraj Shrestha, Trailokyaman Shrestha, and Dan Bahadur Shrestha, played instrumental roles in its establishment.

The school made significant strides in its academic journey. It was recognized as a lower secondary school on February 1, 2005, and later approved as a secondary school on Falgun 1, 2007. The school was inaugurated on 14th Chaitra 2007 by the then Shri 5th Maharajadhiraj Tribhuvan.

Impressed by the school's academic progress and extracurricular activities, the Department of Education selected it as a multi-purpose secondary school in 2018 BS. The school received affiliation from the Council of Higher Secondary Education in 2054 BS and has been teaching subjects under the Faculty of Management, Humanities, and Education.

The school has seen significant infrastructural development over the years. Despite the devastating earthquake of Baisakh 12 and 29, 2072, which damaged the original 23-room academic building, the school has risen from the ashes. A new 33-room school building, a child-friendly counseling center, and a multi-purpose hall with state-of-the-art facilities have been constructed under the USAID-NRES project.

The school also boasts three modern laboratories for physics, chemistry, and biology, a separate computer lab, a well-equipped library, an extra-curricular activity room, and a chamena house. These facilities have significantly enhanced the school's physical infrastructure, contributing to an improved educational level and increased attraction for girls students.
