Overview
Faculty of Animal Science, Veterinary Science, and Fisheries (FAVF) is one of the 3 faculties under the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) in Nepal. The mission of AFU is to produce competent manpower in agriculture, forestry, and allied disciplines. It encourages and supports faculty members and students for research and scholarly activities relevant to the needs of Nepalese agricultural and livestock farmers.
The FAVF fosters student self-development, commitment, and responsibility for the welfare of Nepalese society. Chitwan District is one of the most potential areas for agriculture, livestock, poultry, and aquaculture farming. Presently the livestock raising pattern is changing from household level to commercialization of both poultry and dairy.
This is greatly facilitated by committed farmers and other allied entrepreneurs, the presence of adequate technical support from AFU, suitability of the environment for farming, and adequate marketing facilities. Veterinary faculty has linked up with the university abroad for capacity building, enhancing research and laboratory capacity, faculty and student research, etc.
Two academic programs such as 5 years (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) and 4 years B.Sc. Fisheries are conducted at this Faculty. FAVF has 38 faculties and 42 support staff. Nine Adjunct Faculties have recently been appointed in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, and Fisheries.
Veterinary and Fishery Education has at present been accepted as one of the major determinants for the all-around development of a country. The quality of education has to be enhanced to produce able, productive, disciplined, and socially responsible citizens, and also to create a workforce capable enough to face the challenges of the 21st century.
The promotion of higher education in this field in a pragmatic way would lead to the sustained and rapid development of a society or a nation. Empirical evidence indicates a high positive correlation between educational status and the pace of economic development. There is increasing recognition of the immense potential of the livestock sector in enhancing the income of the poor. Livestock distribution is more equitable than land distribution.
Thus, the livestock sector provides a natural entry point for poverty alleviation programs. A major issue affecting the livestock economy, however, is the quality education and effective delivery of livestock services to the communities. The experts from this Faculty will guide the farmers in increasing productivity and preventing the most common emerging infectious and Zoonotic diseases.
The FAVF will fully commit to sharing the samples and reagents to produce quality peer-reviewed publications and reports. We are also happy to provide space and accommodation for the conduct of workshops and related research activities by the participating faculty members from South Asia and abroad.
This Faculty is having a very good relationship with local organizations such as the Department of Livestock Service (DLS), Nepal Agriculture Research Council (NARC), Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), HART Nepal, LiBIRD, NZFHRC, ANSAB, etc. Similarly, FAVF is having linkages with foreign institutions such as Yamaguchi University Japan, HART UK, University of Veterinary Medicine, Austria Vienna, St. George University Grenada, West Indies, Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge, UK, etc.
