Overview

Achham Multiple Campus, Mangalsen, was established in 1991 AD (2048 BS) as a community campus affiliated with Tribhuvan University (TU) and approved by the University Grants Commission of Nepal. It is located in Mangalsen, Achham district, in the Sudurpashchim Province of Nepal. The campus offers bachelor's programs such as the Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), the Master of Education (MEd), and the Master of Business Studies (MBS) program. AMC also provides ten-plus-two programs, such as Management and Education. Since its establishment, it has been imparting quality higher education with outstanding results.

After the long and hard constructive role of the people in this area to fulfill the need and thirst for higher education of the Indigenous people of  Achham district, before that time, people of this region depended on different campuses of Surkhet, Nepalgunj, Doti, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Kathmandu, and other districts of the country and abroad for their higher education.

Initially, the Achham Campus had a program for I.Com 2048 BS, and then, after the BBS program, it was affiliated with TU in 2062, BS Later in 2063, BS again three years B.ED Program was affiliated with the same university. As a result, AMC provides excellent service and contribution to the Achhami people for higher education. So these days, the campus has been running four-year B.Ed. and BBS two programs under the affiliation of TU, and the campus administration is planning to rerun post-graduate programs shortly very soon.

Features

The campus promotes the students' communication skills through different curricular and co/extra-curricular activities such as Class presentations, report writing, debate programs, oratory programs, poem recitations, group discussions, and public presentation activities. Optional mathematics and account classes are conducted to develop their numerical skills. However, these facilities are provided under electives options chosen by the students.

The campus encourages students to become familiar with information technology and enhance their knowledge using classroom computers and projectors.

Further, they can access free Wi-Fi on campus, which helps them connect their smartphones and study various online materials.

Social work, health, population, and finance students are assigned group and individual fieldwork to enhance their practical knowledge of those subjects. Likewise, campus students are encouraged to form different nonpolitical associations, which conduct and organize various programs that promote the capacity to work as a team and independently.

The campus has established formal relationships and networking with local NGOs, industries, hospitals, banks, and cooperatives. These relationships have helped the institution grow and develop and facilitate students' learning by providing agreed-upon facilities. Through such networking, the campus sends students to different financial institutions for internships. Students of the faculty of education go for teaching practices in the school of Achham district.

The BBS fourth-year students are also taken on industrial tours. Many campus teachers are executive members of different social organizations, such as NELTA, Nepal Scouts, Civil Society, and Nepal Red Cross Society, which has also helped develop campus activities in collaboration both formally and informally.

Achham Campus imparts the value of humanity by encouraging the students to participate in selfless services like the Health Awareness Program, Cleanliness Program, Blood Donation Program, yoga camp, anti-drug /tobacco/corruption campaign, etc., to cultivate moral and ethical values. Master's level students are oriented to the integrity and misconduct of research during their thesis preparation. Moral and ethical slogans are pasted on campus and in the classroom, which always keeps students alert to such ethical matters. The campus will also design a non-credit moral education course to teach all students shortly.

As an affiliated campus of Tribhuvan University (TU), Achham Multiple Campus implements the university's academic calendar and syllabus. Thus, there will be no questions of harmony among them. The campus also harmonizes the syllabus per its needs and local circumstances; however, it does not affect the university's annual calendar.

How does the institution supplement the lecture teaching method with other teaching methods with specific weightage in terms of hours?

Although the campus is trying to avoid the traditional lecturer method of teaching, it is not still possible to ignore it completely. The faculty members try to minimize lecturers by using other student-centric methods like Discussion/interaction, directed studies, presentations, group/pair assignments, case studies, project works, etc. Some of the attempts that the campus has made in this regard have been listed below:

The teachers are oriented to use audio-visual materials. For this purpose, teachers are provided with attractive incentives.

  • Six laptops are provided to the faculties.

  • Multimedia projector is used in the teaching-learning process.

  • Under the Department of Management, there is a provision for orienting students, covering seven days of a subject for project work purposes. Each student must prepare fieldwork/project work reports on their specialization course.

  • Under the Department of Education, the role-play method is applied to 24 days of micro-teaching. Students are sent for a 20-day teaching practice in community schools, where they prepare teaching plans and teach accordingly. The concerned subject teachers observe their classes as well.

  • The campus has been regularly encouraging teachers to apply innovative teaching.

Understanding that the traditional chalk-and-talk method can no longer motivate the students, the campus strives for innovative approaches to teaching that will make the learning process more productive and enjoyable. The following information highlights some notable innovations in teaching:

The students are taken on educational excursions, industrial tours, field visits, fieldwork, museums, and different programs to broaden their practical knowledge because the campus accepts society as an open learning book.

Technology plays a significant role in innovative teaching. Therefore, the campus has purchased six laptops for teachers and provided a multimedia projector to faculty.

The library performs an indispensable function in innovative teaching. Therefore, a new library room has been managed.

Students have open access to reading materials. One librarian has been recruited to improve library management and service delivery to learners.

Under the Department of Education, the role-play method is applied for 24 days. Students are sent for 24-day teaching practice in community schools, where they prepare teaching plans and teach accordingly. The concerned subject teachers observe classes.

The e-library and internet facilities make it easy for faculty members and students to collect and download necessary materials for research and regular teaching.
